Tischkau / Nedd / Yukiko x Malpaso Dance Company
Using the famous Tropicana nightclub in Havana as a case study, *TRAPICANA* explores the tension between cultural authenticity and exotic stereotypes. The piece combines Afro-Cuban dance with trap music and challenges stereotypical notions.

The legendary Tropicana nightclub in Havana (Cuba), with its glamorous history, serves as the starting point for Joana Tischkaus’s new work “TRAPICANA.”
Together with Jeremy Nedd, Sophie Yukiko, and the Malpaso Dance Company, she explores the phenomenon of the “tourist trap” and the inherent tension between cultural authenticity and exoticization. In a nightmarish revue, imagined Afro-Cuban dances collide with trap music.
“TRAPICANA” deconstructs clichés that fuel exoticizing fantasies while simultaneously creating new visual worlds—in an attempt to get a little closer to actual reality.
