Time stretches out and stands still; in Messiaen’s music, the sounds coalesce into swathes of colour: two works are interwoven in this concert, with the quartet and organ taking turns – and telling of terrible angels with seven trumpets and the scent of incense, of swirling rainbows, of singing birds above the abyss, and of the struggle between life and death.
