Tiziana Krüger – intervention, chapter I

Krüger explores the continuities of right-wing symbolism: to this end, the artist prints photographs of blue cornflowers onto a backing sewn from used fire hoses. Since around 1900, the cornflower has been appropriated as a symbol by Greater German nationalists and, later, by NSDAP sympathisers in Austria. Since the 1990s, its image has increasingly appeared on the lapels of politicians from the FPÖ and, later, the AfD.

Tiziana Krüger draws attention to the massive threat to a democratic and solidarity-based society and, through her work, emphasises the need for protest and resistance: neither public space nor the cornflower must simply be left to a resurgent right-wing ideology.
