Detlev Glanert's family opera "The Three Riddles" – An imaginative musical theatre for all ages

In his thrilling opera THE THREE PUZZLES, composer Detlev Glanert combines fairytale elements with socially critical themes, road movie elements with operatic tradition – whimsical, witty, and with a touch of horror.

The result is a musical theater piece for children and adults ages eight and up that tells of courage, friendship, and growing up. Two very different children encounter a mysterious world full of challenges – and find their own path together.

  • Musical Director: Dominic Limburg
  • Director: Brigitte Dethier
  • Participants: Ensemble soloists, children's choir, Berlin State Youth Orchestra, City West Music School, Deutsche Oper Berlin Orchestra

Synopsis:

Lasso doesn't have it easy: His mother, Popa, is a single mother, overworked, and has to keep her bar running. When Lasso hears about Princess Scharada, who must answer three unanswerable questions before anyone can marry her, he decides to try his luck – even if it could mean death. On his journey, he encounters bizarre characters, outwits robbers, encounters fortune tellers and court ladies – and ultimately finds a true friend.

With enchanting imagery, captivating music, and powerful emotions, Glanert's opera brings a work to the stage that addresses social issues in a child-friendly way. This production features more than just professionals on stage: young musicians, singers, and actresses work hand in hand with experienced artists.

Special Participation:

A core element of the production is the collaboration with the Berlin State Youth Orchestra and the City West Music School. More than half of the nearly 100 musicians in the orchestra pit are children and young people. They work on the work together with professionals in workshops and rehearse under the direction of Dominic Limburg before performing alongside experienced orchestra members.

The Three Riddles is an exciting operatic experience for the whole family – ideal for children ages 8 and up and anyone curious about modern musical theater with depth, humor, and imagination.
