by Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv

Maureen has been in prison for over 25 years, serving a life sentence for murder. She is an artist; she paints, plays the piano, and loves papaya, the blue hour, and sunsets in Minnesota.

For several years now, she has been corresponding with Markus, who is part of a theater collective. When Markus asked Maureen if she had any thoughts on the theme of the 2025 Monologue Festival, “I WANT TO BELIEVE,” she promptly wrote back: “That sounds absolutely fantastic.”

Over the course of a year, the correspondence traces the exchange of everyday experiences and life’s setbacks in the lives of Markus and Maureen, as well as the thread of care for someone one barely knows. Maureen ends each of her letters with “Take Care & Stay Safe.” She was previously the protagonist of the theater production *THE PEN PALSHIP* (2021).

Reflecting together on freedom and possessions through letters with women incarcerated in the U.S. opens up new perspectives that shake up what we take for granted and our self-images, shifting our view of values in unexpected directions.
