choreography, text, vocal practice, music and martial arts workshop
The project navigates the tension between connection and rivalry, care and violence, tenderness and survival, and explores how these contradictions can serve as a starting point for artistic creation.
At the heart of the project are Arabic, Hebrew, Yiddish, and German—not only as spoken languages, but as vehicles of identity, memory, and history. Each of these languages carries its own emotional and political weight: trauma and guilt, violence and belonging, loss and longing, as well as the possibility of solidarity, agency, and shared imagination. Step Sister therefore understands language not only as a means of communication, but as a physical, emotional, and political force that lives within the body and continually shapes how we move, listen, speak, and encounter one another.
The workshop offers participants insights into the artistic practice that the three artists have developed over more than a decade of collaboration. By combining choreography, text, voice work, music, and martial arts, it explores the interplay of body, text, and voice as an integrated field of artistic creation. Martial arts are not understood here as a form of combat, but as an embodied practice in which power, resistance, trust, balance, connectedness, and survival can be experienced, questioned, and transformed.
Through movement, voice work, writing, improvisation, and collective composition, participants develop performative tools that emerge from the ongoing negotiation between body, language, and movement. In doing so, they explore how artistic forms can arise from contradictions, complexity, and emotional intensity.
- The workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day.
- Please register online for the workshop.
