Charlottenburg literary history
Under the motto ‘Dare to have culture! – World literature around Steinplatz’, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office, in cooperation with visitBerlin, is organising two walks around Charlottenburg's Steinplatz.
On the occasion of the International Literature Festival Berlin, city guides Marianne Mielke and Michael Bienert will take participants on a literary journey of discovery around Steinplatz.
The history of Steinplatz is closely linked to important figures in world literature – from Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel, who fled into exile in 1933 from the ‘Knie’, today's Ernst-Reuter-Platz, to the playwright Ferdinand Bruckner and Walter Höllerer, who turned the place into a meeting place for contemporary authors after the Second World War.
Traditional pubs, bookshops, antique shops and the Schillertheater keep history alive – as does the Vagantenbühne, which cooperates with the ‘Scenic Writing’ course at the University of the Arts.
These are the last free guided tours around Steinplatz this year, and places are limited to a maximum of 25 participants. It is therefore worth registering quickly via the district office website.

Steinplatz is the heart of a vibrant cultural, educational and memorial landscape that has been explored on city walks since 2020. The tours are funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises through the ‘Special Tourism Projects in the Districts’ funding programme.
