Playgrounds: Works by Purcell, Lully, Bach, Vivaldi, and others
What is known elsewhere as a passacaglia, chaconne, or canon was called "ground" in Baroque England – a repeating bass or harmonic pattern that is imaginatively varied over the course of a piece.
This is precisely the principle that recorder player Stefan Temmingh and the ensemble Nuovo Aspetto play with in their program, which combines Baroque masterpieces with compositions by Chick Corea and Michael Nyman, as well as plenty of improvisational creativity.
