In this year’s autumn concert, the St. Laurentius Choir of Köpenick presents three striking sacred works by the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924).

SUPER FLUMINA BABYLONIS takes us to the banks of the River Babylon. The psalm tells of people in a foreign land who cannot forget their homeland. Fauré was only in his early twenties when he wrote this moving music, lending a poignant, timeless voice to this ancient lament.
This is followed by the REQUIEM, Fauré’s best-known work. The composer himself described it as a Requiem ‘of the human joy of passing on’. Rather than fear and darkness, peace, hope and confidence characterise this extraordinary setting of the Mass for the Dead – which remains one of the most popular choral works of all time.
CANTIQUE DE JEAN RACINE brings the concert to a close. This choral piece was composed by the then 19-year-old Fauré as part of a composition competition. The heartfelt prayer for divine light and peace radiates warmth and serenity, bringing the concert evening to a close in bright, comforting musical beauty.
