Guided tour, 35 years East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery was built in 1990 to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. Over the years, the wall crumbled and the paint peeled. in 2009, everything was put back to square one. The porous masonry was repaired and all the artwork was almost completely replaced. Only one original from 1990 has survived to this day.
the re-creation of the monument is still being discussed today. The tour looks at how artists have copied, reinterpreted or recreated their images 35 years after the East Side Gallery was built and how they view the gallery today:
Is it a place of public, ephemeral art or a monument that cannot be changed? The discussion will focus on the significance of public art and the question of what our society remembers and what is worthy of being a monument.
