Andi’s ‘Späti Paradies’ holds the neighbourhood together; it’s a meeting place and a sounding board for people’s everyday problems. Rosi comes here every day to drink her glass of tap water because she doesn’t want to watch Harald vegetating in front of the telly. Manni pops in to pick up the previous day’s newspapers. Theo raves about the woman he’s currently in love with, simply because she’s smiled at him twice. But this paradise is under threat. Andi’s ex-girlfriend Marleen wants to knock down the building, which is just as dilapidated as the whole neighbourhood.

Späti Paradies
In Juliane Hende’s play, which was staged in 2026 as part of the Heidelberg Play Market, the focus is not so much on the impending demise of the ‘Späti’ as on the stories of the people who visit it every day.
In a touching and humorous way, she puts the spotlight on those who are supposedly on the margins of society.
