If I were to take the easy way out, I’d simply translate ‘Landmusik’ into German as ‘country music’ – and I might not be too far off the mark. Banjo, violin, a piano that often enough sounds like it’s in a saloon, double bass, guitars and drums: it’s hard to deny the similarity. But perhaps that’s where the resemblance ends.

Because ‘Landmusik’ also refers to rural life. We come from the countryside – at least partly from the outback of the Brandenburg countryside, where mice and foxes argue in the fields about what true happiness is. We sing of misty mornings over the fields, of swaying to the tune after a night at the pub, of horses and dripping rain in the woods. But ‘Landmusik’ is also our relationship with this country: a political engagement with the reality of our lives in this German land.
