Kinder- und Jugendtanzcompany Sasha Waltz & Guests
The young dancers, aged 6 to 22, are divided into four age groups and will present their new pieces: “Funke,” “Rain,” “BOLERO,” and “SPLITTER & GANZ.”
In addition, two school performances will be held on July 3 and 6.
A playful approach to movement and dance forms the basis of the work of the steadily growing children’s and youth dance company of Sasha Waltz & Guests at Radialsystem, which has been in existence for nearly 20 years.
The youngest dancers (ages 6–8) have been exploring the different elements for several years now. After water and earth, this group has turned its attention to the element of fire and opens this year’s showings with a dance that sparks fly, accompanied live on the piano.
In their new piece “Rain,” the children aged 9 to 11 explore the diversity of rain: gentle and playful or wild and powerful. What does a light shower or a heavy downpour feel like? The young dancers transform drops into movement, storms into rhythm, and bring the rain to life on stage—sometimes delicate and playful, sometimes stormy and serious.
The teenagers (ages 12–14) interpret Maurice Ravel’s masterpiece “Bolero” from their own perspective. What happens when something remains the same? The young dancers explore how energy, presence, and expression develop through repetition. Dance becomes a journey to oneself, to one’s own body in flux: in repetition, there is no stagnation, but rather development—and it connects with the experience that small changes can have a profound impact.
In “SPLITTER & GANZ,” around 30 dancers from the youth dance company (ages 14+) embark on an embodied search for identity, belonging, and self-determination. Individual stories and collective experiences intertwine, revealing how identity is shaped by origin, environment, and social structures.
“SPLITTER & GANZ” emerged from a process-oriented and participatory approach and, in close dialogue with live music, combines improvisation with choreographic material.
