Chansons on a tightrope with Ben Zimmermann

‘What a circus,’ one thinks, watching the goings-on on the world stage. Times change, and so do the costumes. Some protagonists play the clown, others the ringmaster, and the audience marvels, applauds and holds its breath.

‘History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,’ Mark Twain is said to have remarked.

The singing actor Ben Zimmermann, accompanied by Mark McNeill on the piano, finds the ‘rhymes’ linking yesterday to today in songs from the Weimar era that sound astonishingly contemporary, and asks:

What if progress and achievements begin to falter? What if values that long seemed secure are called into question by a backward somersault? Who leaves the ring as the horse and who as the rider? “Rise or fall – who foots the bill?”
