Saboteurs, those are the others. Really? Don't people always sabotage themselves best? How else can it be that a humanity sitting on a mountain of data, swimming in a flood of knowledge, and at its disposal innumerable technologies, continues to harm itself so much? Is self-sabotage intrinsic to humans and societies? Is this why, against their better judgment, they throw themselves into authoritarian shoals and plunge us into climate catastrophe?
Even as individuals, they stand in their own way the most and single-handedly prevent their own happiness: the wasted email, the missed meeting, the belated declaration of love. We sabotage ourselves, constructing mental worlds that actively contribute to missing our own goals.
But self-sabotage also has a relieving function: If we avoid all effort, we can easily blame our own failure on external circumstances. This effect, however, is only short-term and leads to a downward spiral until we finally perish in apathy and cynicism. Do we avoid pain at all costs, even at the cost of our own happiness? Will our tendency toward self-sabotage reach such a point that we, as humanity, bring about our own self-extinction through technological inventions, war, and environmental destruction? Humanity stands on the brink; but perhaps this is also the best starting point for something new.
