As part of the one-month summer program “Open House,” Berlin-based artist Richard Sides presents a mixtape created specifically for the Mies van der Rohe House, which takes the form of a spatial installation extending throughout the entire building.

Various pieces of furniture are activated and transformed into a hidden speaker installation that invites visitors to engage with and listen to the sound. By reenacting the building’s former existence as a private residence, Sides turns the institution into an instrument for music and sound works.
As an artist and curator, Sides is interested in the psychosomatic potential of media. Through a critical examination of the commercialization of ecstasy and emotion, his sculptures, paintings, and sound works create experiences that emerge from the aesthetics of normality.
“Open House” comprises the summer program at the Mies van der Rohe House and also includes a presentation by the publishing platform BUS on Friday, September 4, at 7 p.m., as well as picnic events. Richard Sides’ mixtape installation is the institution’s second exploration of sound this year, following the presentation by the London-based label Concentric Group in March.
