Two days before Remembrance Day, the concert ‘Grant Us Peace’, taking place on 13 November at 7 pm at Berlin’s Gedächtniskirche, aims to send a message – both audible and palpable – against war, violence and dehumanisation.

In a place that remains scarred by war and destruction to this day, the concert invites people to come together, to commemorate and, in doing so, to shape the future together.

Under the title ‘Grant Us Peace’, countertenor and soprano Philipp Mathmann, the Memoria Chamber Choir of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Concerto Brandenburg & Kerstin Linder-Dewan (violin), and organist and cantor Sebastian Heindl come together for a musical reflection on fundamental human realities in the face of threat, war and violence. The music engages in dialogue with the poetic and philosophical reflections of the Berlin-based author Florian Goldberg. The country has become more colourful, more diverse and, at the same time, more complicated. Who or what, today, would be the ‘people’ called upon to mourn?

Musically, the concert takes the audience on a journey through works by Purcell, Schütz, Bach and Handel, right up to Mozart. It traces the path from a child’s birth into a life full of hardships and suffering, right through to death – and perhaps beyond. From the ‘Et incarnatus est’ from Bach’s Mass in B minor to Mozart’s ‘Laudate Dominum’ from the ‘Vesperae solennes de confessore’.
