“Between Turmoil and New Beginnings – André Herzberg on Music, the GDR and the Present Day”

“Rendezvous at the Centre Bagatelle” is a regular series of talks and encounters with prominent figures from the worlds of culture, politics, literature and television. The focus is on a special guest who, together with journalist and presenter Ulli Zelle, shapes the evening’s programme.

This time, they welcome André Herzberg, singer, author and the defining voice of the legendary East German rock band Pankow. Born in 1955, Herzberg became one of the most distinctive musicians in the GDR thanks to his critical, often provocative lyrics, and, together with Pankow, shaped an entire generation.

In conversation with Ulli Zelle, the discussion centres on musical breakthroughs, resistance and conformity, on biographical upheavals and the question of how much the GDR continues to influence us today. Herzberg talks about his Jewish roots, his artistic development and the power of the stage, which – as he puts it – ‘makes him shine’. And, of course, he will also be singing this evening – live, spontaneous and up close.

An evening full of personal insights, history, music and conviction.
