This ocean-like mass appears to be an intelligent life form, yet humankind has so far failed to establish contact with it.
The psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to the space station orbiting the planet, but he finds the station in a state of complete disrepair. The station commander has apparently taken his own life, whilst the other crew members appear frightened and suspicious. Eventually, Kelvin realises why: the ocean of Solaris creates physical forms from people’s deepest memories and feelings of guilt, and soon an old acquaintance appears to him too.
