The Quatuor Ébène continues its Beethoven cycle to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, and with this program presents the full range of Beethoven’s artistic development.

In his early string quartets, Op. 18, Beethoven is still drawing inspiration from his teacher Joseph Haydn, yet already displays an unmistakable personal style. The sixth work in the cycle is characterized by its variety of moods—ranging from melancholy to exuberance.

With the late A-minor Quartet, Op. 132, Beethoven reaches a new, complex realm of expression. The work became famous for the moving passage “A Holy Song of Thanks from a Recovered Man to the Deity.”
