Based on the observation that the “East” increasingly serves as a cultural, aesthetic, and political projection surface, the multi-part exhibition, discourse, and publication project “Projections onto the East” examines the ideological attributions associated with the terms “East” and “West.”

International artists, scholars, and authors shed light on historical and contemporary lines of conflict—ranging from the politics of memory in the GDR to antisemitism and post-socialist transformation processes, all the way to current geopolitical tensions. The project centers on the question of the extent to which the dichotomy between “East” and “West” continues to shape our thinking and our present.

Two exhibitions at the n.b.k. and the Schinkel Pavillon are complemented by a publication and a project website that bring together artistic positions, scholarly perspectives, and discursive contributions. An extensive accompanying program also offers further avenues for engaging with the project’s central questions.
