The photographs put a face to people who were persecuted for their desire for freedom and their political convictions, and serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

Frank Ebert, Berlin’s Commissioner for Coming to Terms with the SED Dictatorship, will speak at the opening. Afterwards, Birgit Schlicke and Mario Röllig will join the photographer André Wagenzik in a discussion with eyewitnesses to share their experiences and talk about how the project came about.

The discussion will be moderated by Jessica Steckel from the Coordinating Office for Eyewitnesses.

Afterwards, the Memorial will host a small reception.
