Opportunities and challenges of a new energy source

Harnessing the power of the sun on Earth – it sounds like science fiction, but it is precisely what researchers around the globe are attempting to achieve through nuclear fusion. They aim to make the physical process that takes place inside the sun technically viable on Earth.

As a potentially inexhaustible and climate-friendly source of energy, nuclear fusion is currently the talk of the town and highly relevant in political terms. But what really lies behind this promising technology? Why are temperatures in the hundreds of millions required, and how far are we still from the first fusion power station?

The workshop ties in with the latest issue of acatech HORIZONTE on nuclear fusion. Following a brief introduction to the basics, you will explore various fusion processes and discuss the opportunities the technology could offer for energy supply – as well as the technical, economic and societal questions that remain to be answered. The workshop invites you to ask questions, discover connections and take a critical look at the technology. No prior knowledge is required.

What is an Open Lab evening?

Every Thursday, things get creative in the Lab. You’ll learn about methods such as design thinking and future storytelling, have the chance to try out 3D printers and laser cutters, and take a look behind the scenes of the Lab’s projects. There’s something new every week.

Partnership

A collaboration between Futurium and acatech – German Academy of Science and Engineering. acatech is a shareholder in Futurium.

Workshop leaders

The workshop is led by Katharina Hahn and Theresa Leberle. They both work for the editorial team of the HORIZONTE publication at acatech – German Academy of Science and Engineering. As part of the new issue on nuclear fusion, they have been working intensively on this technology of the future. acatech HORIZONTE explains complex technological topics that are ‘on the horizon’ in a way that everyone can understand. To discover, learn and join the conversation.
