The town of Güllen is on the brink of ruin. Unemployment is high, and the economy is in shambles. But a glimmer of hope appears on the horizon. Claire Zachanassian, née Klara Wäscher, returns to her hometown, bringing with her the billions she has amassed through lucrative marriages and subsequent divorces. All of Güllen is hoping for a generous donation to finally get back on its feet financially.

And Claire is ready to donate, because she is out for revenge. She promises a billion for the head of motel owner Alfred Ill, who impregnated her as a young girl and left her to raise the child alone. To deny paternity, Ill even bribed two witnesses and a judge. The people of Güllen strictly reject the dishonest offer. How long will the townspeople’s sense of morality hold out? And is justice ultimately for sale? In his

classic The Visit, Friedrich Dürrenmatt brings together highly topical issues and confronts us with the question of whether everything in this world is for sale—even morality. Director Lily Kuhlmann transforms the story into a gripping horror tale from which there is no escape for Alfred Ill.
