A staged reading

Christmas is just around the corner; everyone wants to make it extra special—and ends up failing in the most comical ways. The “state of emergency” that is the Christmas season magnifies family and social conflicts as if under a magnifying glass, and for those involved, much goes wrong in their struggle to find a sense of peace—but sometimes hope emerges precisely where you least expect it.

Axel Pape, in the role of an angel sent from heaven, presents stories by the renowned authors Alexander Osang and Robert Gernhardt, ironically and poetically complemented by short poetic passages ranging from Rilke to Ringelnatz and by the “dear God,” who occasionally interjects in protest. The story is set against the backdrop of Berlin at Christmas, with musical highlights provided by Nat King Cole, Pink Martini, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, the Pogues, and others.

In this way, the evening weaves its own emotional Christmas story and, with humor and depth, bridges the gap between the joyful anticipation of Christmas from our childhood and the modern pitfalls of the annual Christmas machine.

“Cozy, funny, poetic, satirical: ideal. And with depth, ‘Schöne Bescherung’ is definitely worth seeing.” (Die Rheinpfalz)
