With immersive theater productions lasting several hours, Nesterval turns theater into an experience. In their hometown of Vienna, their plays sell out within minutes. Now the group is coming to Berlin for the first time and developing a site-specific work for the Sophiensæle: Nesterval’s Eldorado. At its heart is the city’s queer history before and during the terror of National Socialism—particularly in Berlin’s Scheunenviertel neighborhood and around the Sophiensæle. Inspired by the biographies of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans* people who were systematically persecuted and murdered during the Nazi dictatorship, fiction and reality are skillfully woven together into a moving narrative in which the audience becomes the protagonists’ thoughts.
The Nesterval Ensemble consists of actors, performers, and stage artists, such as drag queens and kings. Different performance styles coexist on equal footing. The result is a queer folk theater that shines a light from the past onto our present. In small groups, the audience follows the stories only partially at a time. The subsequent discussion about the experience is part of the experience itself. This creates unique spaces for
reflection that linger in the memory.
