Alan Gilbert, conductor

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, this concert by the Berliner Festspiele honors composer Hans Werner Henze, who was associated with the festival throughout his life, with a performance of his one-hour piano concerto Tristan. Soloist Tamara Stefanovich will perform alongside the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Alan Gilbert, which will also be performing Brahms’ First Symphony for its debut at the Musikfest Berlin.

After Henze's funeral music with its prominent piano part, which mourns those who have died and “whom humanity now mourns,” Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms' First Symphony. The sombre struggles of the C minor first movement are contrasted with a finale that ultimately finds its way to the most radiant C major.
