It was his first major success, his breakthrough, so to speak: *Nabucco*, which premiered at La Scala in Milan in the spring of 1842, marked the beginning of Giuseppe Verdi’s brilliant career, during which he would rise to become Italy’s preeminent opera composer, virtually unrivaled for several decades.

Set in biblical times in Jerusalem and Babylon, Nabucco explores the fate of two peoples and cultures, but also the arrogance of the eponymous protagonist, who, in his excess, declares himself a god and subsequently descends into madness.

Scenes of solemn grandeur and haunting music—such as the famous “Va pensiero” chorus of the captive Hebrews—stand alongside moments of intense expression, filled with drama and passion.

Emma Dante, a renowned opera, theater, and film director, stages her first production at the State Opera, while the accomplished Verdi expert Bertrand de Billy conducts this equally impressive and powerful work.
