Openair, Special Guest: Candy Hammerschmidt

The MOKA EFTI ORCHESTRA is a 14-piece ensemble from Berlin that brings the electrifying sound of the 1920s into the 21st century.

Founded in 2016 specifically for the globally successful TV series Babylon Berlin, the orchestra used its screen fame as a springboard to conquer the stages of Europe. Named after the iconic Moka Efti dance hall of 1920s Berlin, the band draws inspiration from the glamour and party-crazed decadence of a bygone era.

The orchestra was founded by songwriters Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien, along with arranger/saxophonist Sebastian Borkowski, and blends swing, hot jazz, and Afro-Latin rhythms with a contemporary flair.

“Zu Asche, zu Staub” became the band’s internationally acclaimed hit as the theme song for Babylon Berlin.

Since its debut at the Berlin XJazz Festival, the MOKA EFTI ORCHESTRA has performed in Germany, Denmark, Norway, Poland, and Switzerland—including sold-out shows at the Reeperbahn and Elbjazz festivals in Hamburg, the Stuttgart Jazz Open, the Festival da Jazz St. Moritz, at the Komische Oper Berlin, and the Munich Philharmonie.

Their debut album “Erstausgabe” (2020) reached #23 on the German charts, followed by their second LP “Telegram” (2022).

The MOKA EFTI ORCHESTRA’s latest release is the 10-inch vinyl single “Herz / Wo ich geboren bin” featuring singer and actor Christian Friedel, known from “Babylon Berlin” as police photographer Gräf. Friedel also plays a leading role in the Oscar-winning film “The Zone of Interest” (2024) and currently appears in the internationally successful series “The White Lotus.”

In 2025, the MOKA EFTI ORCHESTRA, together with actor Benno Fürmann and cabaret performance artist Le Pustra, presented an innovative musical reading with a concert titled “Der nasse Fisch” to 13 of Germany’s most beautiful venues.

The sold-out tour included stops at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg and the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
