Movement Lecture and Performance by Sésé Niyabja with Zayou
Originating in Martinique, Bèlè profoundly expresses the interconnectedness of body, community, and spirit. Each step, guided by the rhythm of the drums, reflects a deep understanding of one’s own physicality and emotions. By surrendering to the movements of the sound, the dancers tap into forms of bodily knowledge that foster healing, release, and self-empowerment. Mètkow: Chajé – Déchajé aims to introduce the audience to Martinique’s Bèlè tradition while creating an immersive ceremonial experience.
This movement presentation invites participants to experience the dynamic energy of Bèlè, where community, self-expression, and healing processes converge into a powerful celebration.
The presentation culminates in a live performance in which the artist embodies the essence of Bèlè through dance, sound, and storytelling. Niyabja welcomes those present into a sacred circle, which is opened by the rhythm of the Bèlè drum and the rustling breath of the shell instrument Konk de Lambi.
