The Mies van der Rohe House is exhibiting works by Matt Browning (b. 1984, lives and works in New York) created since 2013. For his sculptures, Browning works a single piece of Douglas fir in such a way as to create chains that are movable yet strictly interconnected. Their structure allows for various relationships with the space, as they can be condensed into a straight line or extended to form a grid.

Browning’s sculptures appear identical only at first glance. The individual surfaces and varying proportions of the carvings arise from the respective sizes and specific characteristics of the wood. Taken together, the works appear as a system of units arranged like words, and can thus become context-specific through their placement in space rather than through their craftsmanship.
The exhibition at the Mies van der Rohe Haus is a continuation of a presentation held at the Kunstverein München in spring 2026. They are like two links in a larger chain: Each in its Isolation, Locked Together in Unity.
