“Today, the gates opened for the very last time to welcome more than 90,000 gymnasts from every corner of our country. So that they, too, could present their performances. So that they, too, could express their longing for peace, friendship and a happy life for all people on this planet. These are the most beautiful images of our homeland. This is where our peoples live, this is where our children are born, this is where we are at home – here, in our socialist community, wisely led by the Communist Party.”
In ‘Loops & Hoops’, the Spartakiade mass gymnastics festival serves as the starting point for a reflection on everyday life in Czechoslovakia during the period of so-called ‘normalisation’.
With fascinating set design and a stage the size of an old television, the production explores themes of uniformity and monotony, conformity and personal freedom, nostalgic kitsch and a critique of nostalgia.
- On 4 November at 6.00 pm, an introduction to ‘Loops & Hoops’ in Easy Language will be given by Melanie Seifert.
(largely without spoken dialogue; very little spoken Czech with English subtitles)
