In the exhibition program of the Paul Cassirer Art and Publishing House, female artists were significantly underrepresented compared to their male counterparts. While some are now considered part of the established canon of art history—including Berthe Morisot, Käthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, and Gabriele Münter—many others are scarcely known today or have been completely forgotten.

This lecture examines this situation and explores the visibility and perception of female artists at the Cassirer Art Salon, as well as the course of their subsequent artistic careers.

Franziska Lietzmann studied art history, history, and German literature at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. Since 2009, she has worked for various museums and art institutions, including the Photographic Collection at Schloss Kummerow, the Hamburger Bahnhof—National Gallery of Contemporary Art, and the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. She is co-curator of the exhibition “Cassirer and the Breakthrough of Impressionism.”
