In the Tiergarten district
Today, it is hard to imagine that there was once a lively residential area around the Kulturforum, the Philharmonie and Potsdamer Platz. All that remains is a small red-brick church with a tall Italian-style tower: St. Matthew's Church.
The literary walk follows in the footsteps of the former residents through 100 years of the Tiergarten district. Brigitte Landes talks about Fontane's apartment in Potsdamer Straße, James Simon's and Eduard Arnold's art collections, salonnières such as Fanny Lewald, Felicie Bernstein, Marie von Bunsen and Bettine von Arnim. Using diaries, letters and memoirs, she describes the political upheavals leading up to the destruction of the Tiergarten district by the Nazi regime's urban planning, the expulsion of its inhabitants and its final destruction during the Second World War.
Brigitte Landes works as a freelance dramaturge, director and author.
