The “Heupferdchen” Species Identification Certificate—named after the “Seepferdchen” swimming badge—recognizes early achievements in exploring nature. In addition to identifying some native animals, plants, or fungi, this includes learning typical research methods and how to treat nature with care.

The “Heupferdchen” is for everyone! It playfully combines experiencing nature with the targeted observation and identification of species, as well as knowledge of ecological relationships. Participants embark on a small research mission: searching for species, gently catching them, identifying them, and documenting them in the discovery sheet. In this way, they learn about habitats, threats, and species conservation measures—using visual materials and simple identification aids. At the end, a badge awaits as recognition for curiosity and enthusiasm for nature.

The idea was developed by the Department of Biology Education at the University of Bonn. Based on this, Grün Berlin’s “Campus Stadt Natur” has developed a pilot workshop, which will launch this year at locations including the Britzer Garten.
