Concert & Jam Session

Lionel Haas, a pianist born in Bonn, has been active on the Berlin music scene for several years. As well as being involved in a number of projects, he leads his own trio, which he is now presenting as part of the jam session at the old fire station.

As well as his own compositions, the band’s repertoire also features special arrangements of standards, some of which can be heard on his CD ‘Going and Going’, released in 2013.

Line-up:

  • Lionel Haas: piano
  • Martin Lillich: bass
  • Yatziv Caspi: drums

Lionel Haas has been playing the piano since the age of nine. Following a four-year stay in Washington DC, he has been based in Berlin since 1999 and, alongside his trio, quintet and octet formations, works as one of the most sought-after sidemen on the Berlin jazz scene. He is at home in many jazz styles and consistently proves himself to be a highly virtuosic soloist with a distinct blues feel.

Martin Lillich, a self-taught electric bassist, studied double bass at the Berlin University of the Arts under Klaus Stoll. He also plays a 6-string acoustic fretless bass. Musically at home in classical, Caribbean, jazz, Balkan and Bosporus music, the New Klezmer scene and flamenco. Lillich is an integral part of the Berlin and German jazz scene, both as a soloist and as a sideman. From 1995 to 2005, he was a lecturer at the Hans Eisler School of Music. From 2003 onwards, he was the bandleader of Pompduck & Circumstance for several years. He has been working at the Global Music Academy since 2010.

Yatziv Caspi, born in Israel, has lived in Berlin since 2009. He began playing the drums at the age of six and, over the years, explored various ‘musical landscapes’ – from jazz and pop to fusion, progressive rock and world music. His encounter with Sanja Sharma, who introduced him to the tabla, proved to be a defining moment and added new dimensions to his playing and his approach to rhythm. Alongside his work as a drummer and percussionist, he records albums and teaches – always with a deep love of rhythm and sound.
