Neoclassical compositions at the intersection of film music and Gregorian chant

Jaspar Libuda’s compositions are classical soundscapes, musical stories without words, a declaration of love for melody and the deep emotions it is capable of evoking. A fusion of virtuoso double bass playing and electroacoustic music.

Using a five-string double bass with a high C string, built especially for him, along with live electronics and a loop station, he creates an entire ensemble before his audience’s ears, layering textures and rhythms upon one another and weaving melodies and silence into a dense soundscape – at once melancholic and full of joie de vivre. A state of limbo between styles and genres, with timbres reminiscent of the cello, percussion, guitar and oud.

In the compositions on his latest and third solo album, *Das Buch der Träume* (*The Book of Dreams*), Jaspar Libuda expresses his love for both minimal music and Gregorian chant in equal measure. He creates spaces in which time seems to expand from a fraction of a moment into a universe of sonic possibilities.
