Caty Forden, Uschi Niehaus, Beate Spitzmüller

The exhibition ‘Irre Lichter’ (Crazy Lights) at the Frauenmuseum Berlin e.V. (Women's Museum Berlin) shows works by artists Caty Forden, Uschi Niehaus and Beate Spitzmüller. The main theme of the exhibition is light, a motif that, especially in the dark season, is a symbol of longing, warmth and mysticism.

Through painting, music and drawing, the artists explore the mysterious glow in the midst of darkness in very different ways.

Depictions of will-o'-the-wisps have been a subject of art for centuries. The belief that the diffuse lights seen in forests, cemeteries or swamps are the souls of the dead, ghosts or demons places the phenomenon in the realm of the supernatural. The exhibition takes up this association and adds a play on words: ‘Irre Lichter’ (Mad Lights) combines light as a bearer of hope on the one hand and madness, being lost or mad on the other in one title. This contrasting pair of words can also be read as an ironic commentary on our present, in which madness has become the norm.
