Opera in three acts (1924)
In his poetic opera "The Cunning Little Vixen," Leoš Janáček brings nothing less than the eternal cycle of life and transience to the stage.
Leoš Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen – The Eternal Cycle of Life
The story centers on the young, rebellious vixen, Slyhead, who is captured by a forester and sparks a small revolution on his farm before escaping into the forest. There, she finds freedom and starts a family with a fox—but ultimately falls victim to a poacher. The seemingly civilized human world gazes longingly at the untamed nature that exists according to its own laws of life and love.Janáček was inspired by Rudolf Těsnohlídek's picture story and, in his opera, premiered in 1924, created a sensual, impressionistic score that multifacetedly captures the close intertwining of humans and animals.
The production is directed by Ted Huffman, who makes his State Opera debut with this production, while Sir Simon Rattle, a renowned Janáček expert, conducts.
