In almost no other place were the social and cultural upheavals in West Germany in the 1960s and 1970s as evident as in Berlin-Kreuzberg: through labour recruitment agreements with countries such as Italy, Greece and Turkey, and the rise in labour migration, changes that came to define the reality of West Germany became visible here on a smaller scale.

The group exhibition ‘Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960’, taking place in autumn 2026, is dedicated to the diverse and hitherto largely unrecognised cultural output centred on the theme of labour migration, and demonstrates how artists in Kreuzberg engage with the tensions and issues of their time.
