At the foot of Berlin's oldest secular building, the Archaeological Window on the Citadel houses the oldest known medieval Jewish gravestones in the Berlin area. These gravestones were likely removed from the Jewish cemetery in Spandau in the 15th century and used in the construction of the citadel. The excavation site reveals the remains of a Slavic timber and earth wall, the subsequent stone castle wall, and the Renaissance-era palace complex.
