In hardly any other place were the social and cultural upheavals in West Germany during the 1960s and 1970s as clearly evident as in Berlin-Kreuzberg: through labour recruitment agreements with countries such as Italy, Greece and Turkey, and the rise in labour migration, changes that shaped the reality of the Federal Republic of Germany became visible here on a small scale.
The group exhibition ‘Kreuzberg: Art and Migration since 1960’, due to take place in autumn 2026, is dedicated to the diverse and hitherto largely overlooked cultural output centred on the theme of labour migration, and demonstrates how artists in Kreuzberg engage with the tensions and questions of their time.
