A Journey Through the Milky Way

Embark on a breathtaking journey through the Milky Way and discover the cosmic movements that shape our place in the universe.

Human life is measured in terms of movement: the Earth rotates; we orbit the Sun. Whilst the stars in our night sky appear fixed and the constellations unchanging, they are in fact in constant motion. The Sun, too – and with it, we – are ceaselessly travelling round the centre of the Milky Way.

Be there when these movements become visible. State-of-the-art visualisations, based on observations from the Gaia space observatory, reveal spectacular moments from our solar system’s past and future: wandering stars, comets, colourful clouds of gas and dust, and, for the first time, the dramatic merger of our galaxy with a smaller satellite galaxy.

The event was developed by the American Museum of Natural History with the support and in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
