Bella Napoli

Following the great success of “Concerti all’arrabbiata,” the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra continues its musical journey of discovery through Italy—this time with a melodious detour to Naples. During the Baroque era, the city at the foot of Mount Vesuvius was considered one of Europe’s most important musical centers, alongside Rome and Venice. In its opera houses, churches, and aristocratic palaces, a distinctive musical culture flourished that attracted composers from all over Europe. George Frideric Handel, too, drew inspiration from Neapolitan opera and church music during his travels in Italy; his opera *Agrippina* was performed in Naples in 1713 to great acclaim.

In addition to famous names such as Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the program also highlights masters who have been unjustly forgotten, such as Leonardo Leo and Giovanni Battista Mele. They are all united by the characteristic Neapolitan style—music of great melodic elegance, lively virtuosity, and immediate emotional expressiveness.

Together with the multi-award-winning recorder player Lucie Horsch, who—despite her young age—has long since established herself on major international concert stages, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra presents these musical treasures with wit, spirit, and Mediterranean charm. Buon appetito!
