Maarten van Heemskerck
Following a long and labour-intensive stay in Rome, the painter Maarten van Heemskerck returned to his home town of Haarlem in 1537, where he was to continue to draw on his impressions of Italy for decades to come.
This is particularly evident in his highly unusual painting of Momus from 1559: join Henrik Engel as he unravels a curious ancient tale about art and rivalry amongst artists!
A ‘Who’s Who’ of art history awaits you in one of the most important museums of European painting from the 13th to the 18th century. The weekly guided tour focusing on individual artists offers you an entertaining and inspiring overview of the Gemäldegalerie’s collection.
