Journalist and literary critic Joachim Scholl talks to author and artist Ulrike Damm about her work. She reads from her new book: "Es will alles gut durchdacht sein." (edition frölich, 2024).

In her texts, Ulrike Damm tells of the search for meaning and happiness in life. Her novels and stories are about people who pursue the question of how to live a sensible life. They want to do it right but their life balance tells them otherwise. Attachments and dependencies take place within the narrow framework of learned constraints, as do rejections and injuries. These seem unavoidable in family structures, where people try to free themselves from their clutches through loud intentions and grotesque undertakings.

As an author and artist, Ulrike Damm writes her texts at least twice. After writing them, she traces them by hand, creating visual psychograms of the protagonists.
