Hoyoung Im
In times of humanitarian crises, anger and fear grow relentlessly and polarize our societies. Drawing on the *Zhong Yong*, the Confucian text on the Middle Way and moderation, and its central thesis regarding the four basic human emotions—euphoria, anger, sorrow, and desire—Hoyoung Im explores how these emotions can be balanced in a way that leads to a happy life.
Hoyoung’s choreographic response is to turn toward one’s own personal history.
He links the process of recalling one’s own emotions with the traditional ritual of the Korean ancestral cult, Jesa, in order to uncover not only the differences but, above all, the commonalities with one’s ancestors—through laughter, tears, hatred, and desire.
The ritual explores the question of an ideal, harmonious future and the willingness to prepare for what lies ahead. What do people need to be happy together?
