Ligia Lewis & Liz Rosenfeld

Choreographer Ligia Lewis and performance artist Liz Rosenfeld meet at the intersections of knowledge, access, (un)readability, and (in)visibility. They navigate a politically charged space and explore family histories through movement, dance, and song.

Through a strangely multifaceted and nuanced exploration of their fathers’ portraits—a dance between homage and critique—they question what they inherit (or reject) and, with humor, examine the possibilities of radical coalition, drawing from their own shared experience.

As children of Jewish-American fathers whose lives were shaped by civil rights activism, Lewis and Rosenfeld draw on this shared background to address political disappointments in the present. Through their lived experiences as a Black-presenting femme and as a trans non-binary person, the two artists explore choreographic and autobiographical connections.

Their collaboration critiques abstraction as a neutralizing force. This duet brings their embodied politics together in a chaotic, comic, tragic, and nuanced portrayal of Jewishness, Blackness, transness, and the uncertainty inherent in becoming.
