With a workforce of 91,000 full-time staff and around 180,000 informants, the Ministry for State Security collected, processed and archived millions of pieces of information on the population of the GDR and other states right up until the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Whilst, in the autumn of 1989, courageous citizens took to the streets and voiced their discontent with the SED regime, Stasi officers were secretly destroying the evidence of their unlawful activities.

The storming of Stasi headquarters on 15 January 1990 put an end to this destruction of files in Berlin. Today, the documents of the GDR secret police that were secured at that time are held in the Stasi Records Archive.

During the guided tour of the permanent exhibition and the archive rooms, participants will learn more about the events of autumn and winter 1989–90, the reconstruction of so-called ‘pre-destroyed’ documents, and the major challenges involved in preserving the collection.

Following the guided tour, you can visit the Stasi Records Archive’s sample collection of files and submit an application to view the files on the spot.

The number of participants is limited to 15. Advance booking is available at: Einblick-ins-geheime@bundesarchiv.de or by telephone on 030 18 665-6699.
