Enchanting wool and silk

The Elector on horseback in battle, or princesses enjoying tea and coffee in the theatre. Every detail is clearly visible, yet it is all made up of countless interwoven silk and woollen threads.

A brief look at the tapestries reveals interesting facts about how they were made. Afterwards, under expert guidance, visitors can try their hand at the craft of weaving themselves on weaving boards and table looms.

How is silk made? Why were red garments more expensive than others? How did weavers manage to weave entire stories onto huge tapestries?

During the tour of the castle, children and parents will learn all sorts of interesting facts about precious fabrics and textiles from the time of the lady of the house, Louise Henriette of Orange.

In the museum workshop, there will then be an opportunity to try your hand at weaving. Using small looms, thick wool can be woven into seat cushions and bags. With finer wool, smaller pouches can be made on three table looms and a floor loom. Depending on your stamina, enthusiasm and the time available, everyone will take home their own woven creation.
